Spain Edge Close Encounter With Green Machine

Encounters between these two sides are always tight and today was no difference. Sean Murray was causing the Spanish defence trouble from the opening minutes as he created a chance from nothing; darting out of his own half and swiftly into the Spanish circle only for his pull back pass to be intercepted at the final moment. Jamie Carr was called into action 2 minutes later as a Spanish drag flick look destined for the top corner before Carr got a strong stick to it to deflect it wide. The action continued at pace and this time the chance fell to Peter Caruth who smoothly spun his marker but didn’t fully connect with his close range shot and Quico Cortes booted the ball clear. The exchange of chances didn’t let up and Stuart Loughrey had to intercept and clear a shot in front of goal. A penalty corner each in the space of 90 seconds saw both Carr and Cortes make further saves to keep the game at 0-0 approaching half time. Arguably the chance of the half was manufactured by Chris Cargo who picked up the ball in his own half before calmly slipping the pass to O’Donoghue at the top of the Spanish circle, but the shot across goal missed the outstretched Murray at the back post by inches.

Green Machine Put 4 Past Canada In 5 Nations Opener
Ireland dominated large chunks of the first half and inside the opening few minutes Peter Caruth saw his shot fly over the crossbar shortly before Julian Dale spun his marker to shoot goalward. Ireland had the first PC of the match and Dale saw his drag flick saved, but Canada were quick to win their own PC at the other end and Gordon Johnston fired home to give his side the lead against the run of play. But 3 goals in the second quarter cemented the Green Machine’s dominance as they pounced on any Canadian mistakes, and duly punished them. Sean Murray drew the sides level as he blasted his shot goalbound in the 22nd minute, following some silky skills from Shane O’Donoghue to force his way into the circle. Luke Madeley left Antoni Kindler no chance in the Canadian goal as his drag flick made it 2-1. 2 minutes later and O’Donoghue had put daylight between the sides with a drag flick of his own, flinging it low into the corner out of Kindler’s reach to make it 3-1 on the cusp of half time.

India go down fighting in final after shootout ends in Belgium's favour
Sundeep Misra
Flashy passes, super-strikes, swift counters, reverse hits, acrobatic saves and in the end a shootout. The perfect pot-boiler that you expect in a final with two teams that are trying to realign the power structure in world hockey. Belgium began in a hurry blowing away four penalty corners and a stroke, all in the first quarter, and then on the back of an Indian resurgence, came back to equalise not once or twice but four times before taking the game to a shootout and winning it 3-0 to clinch the second leg of the 4-Nation Invitational Hockey Tournament. India, surprisingly, good shootout exponents couldn’t slot in a single goal. At the end of regulation time, both teams were locked 4-4. In a way, it would be slightly shattering for India as they had weathered most of the Belgian storm but a wayward defensive line and a few soft goals let India down. For India, this was their second consecutive loss in a final to Belgium; and their third defeat to the Olympic silver medallists across both the legs.
